Bio, Presentation Descriptions, and Speaking Schedule

Attorney Mike Smith is the President of Home School Legal Defense Association, an organization which he helped found in 1983. Established to protect the right of parents to teach their children at home, HSLDA now represents over 75,000 member families. Mike became involved in defending home schoolers after he and his wife Elizabeth decided to home school their children. Three of their four children graduated from home schooling and all have graduated from college.

Mike has been speaking at home school conferences for over 15 years. His desire is to communicate his overriding belief that God has raised up this movement for a special purpose at this time in history, and that the benefits of home schooling far exceed the burdens, with special emphasis on encouragement to moms and challenge to dads to be involved.

Remembering the Reason, Renewing the Vision

A general overview of the challenges, burdens, and benefits of home schooling from a veteran home school father and leader. Addressing the potential home schooler, the new home schooler, the veteran home schooler and all home schoolers in between, Michael Smith outlines the success of home schooling in academics and socialization, describes the legal and legislative advances, and concludes that home schoolers have earned the right to be left alone. For home schoolers who are tiring and losing the vision, he reminds them of the benefits of home schooling and offers some practical suggestions for lessening the pressure on the home schooling family, especially Mom. This talk consistently receives the highest evaluations.

The Angry Child: What Ticks Johnny Off?

Have any of your children demonstrated a tendency toward anger or a bad temper? If so, this session is absolutely essential for you. Anger is a God-given emotion and did not come about as a result of the Fall. However, the Bible says, “Be angry, and sin not.” This talk addresses the aspects of anger from a biblical perspective, focusing on the positive and negative sides of anger. Michael Smith also delineates the five steps that lead to rebellion.

The Father’s Role in Home Education

Almost every father has heard that he is to lead his family spiritually, physically, and in every other way. However, many fathers will tell you that no one has ever told them how to effectively lead their children, especially in the area of spiritual development. Michael Smith presents encouraging and practical tips to fathers for becoming a helpful participant in the home education program and a leader in the home. He provides insight on the mental and emotional benefits to mothers and children fathers can provide through specific activities, and offers suggestions to men on being more effective as husbands. Overriding the entire talk will be the open admission by the presenter of his many failures and a few successes in this whole area of parenting. The session concludes with a list of the six things home schooling mothers have identified as the primary ways their husbands can be more effective in the family’s home school program.

How to Overcome Fear of Failure in Home Schooling

One of the greatest spiritual enemies home schooling mothers face is the fear of failure. In this presentation, based upon scriptural principles gleaned from King Jehoshaphat of Judah and the teachings of Jesus Christ, Michael Smith provides specific applications for overcoming the fear of failure. This session provides general direction on how to set appropriate goals to ensure success.

The History of Home Schoolers’ Struggle to Be Free

The relative freedom home schoolers enjoy today did not always exist. Michael Smith takes his audience back to the early days of the modern-day home school movement in this presentation and describes the legal situation pioneering home schoolers faced, the sacrifices they made, and the battles they fought to establish the freedom we know today. His timeline will bring the audience up to the current struggles home schoolers are engaged in, and provide a glimpse of future dangers that will require vigilance on the part of each home schooling family. Just as God required Joshua to establish a memorial by removing 12 stones from the Jordan River so that the fathers would tell their children of God’s miraculous deliverance, home schooling parents should tell their children the history of the battles home schoolers faced. This is the only way we will preserve home education to the next, and future, generations.

How to Respond to a Truant Officer or Social Worker Contact

As the government’s ever-growing role expands to encompass family life and decision-making, the information presented in this seminar is critical for every attendee to know. Michael Smith calls upon his 18 years of defending home schooling families against social services and child protective service contacts to inform the audience of the newest threat to their freedom. This session primarily addresses your state’s laws relating to social services contacts and provides general application for other states as well.

Triumph Through Adversity: God's Purpose for Adversity

All Christians face trials and tribulations. But sometimes it seems like home schooling Christians have more than their share. Mike Smith will look at four specific purposes for adversity, explaining that how we handle the adversity is important. The purpose of the talk is to encourage and comfort those who are going through adversity and give scriptural direction for making the adversity a positive experience in their lives.

Balancing Responsibilities: Family & Home Schooling

Many home school parents confess that one of their greatest difficulties is trying to balance all their responsibilities. This workshop will approach this challenge from a strictly biblical perspective. Mike Smith will explain that the key to solving the time crunch is establishing priorities, and he tells how to carry out those priorities. This is an essential workshop for every attendee. Lives will be changed, schedules will be kept, and many families, perhaps for the first time, will go through days, months, and years without the frustration of feeling like a failure because they have not accomplished their goals and objectives.
